Italy has become the first country to block Microsoft-backed chatbot, ChatGPT, due to a reported data breach. The Italian Data Protection Authority has taken provisional action until the chatbot respects privacy, including temporarily limiting the company’s processing of Italian user data. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation cites the lack of a legal basis for justification of "massive collection" and "processing of personal data" used to train ChatGPT’s algorithms. OpenAI was given 20 days to report what measures it had taken to ensure privacy or face hefty fines of either €20m ($22m) or 4% of annual global revenue.
