Kolkata Police's cyber cell has warned WhatsApp users about a new scam. The fraudsters target victims through Facebook Messenger, impersonating people on their friends’ lists and offering yoga classes, before sending a link and requesting a six-digit OTP code to be shared. Unbeknownst to the victims, the code is actually their WhatsApp verification code, and by sharing it, they lose access to their WhatsApp account. Criminals use the hacked accounts to impersonate victims and extort money from their contact lists, usually under the pretext of an emergency repayment.
